METALWORK

FLOWERS

My first metal flower using steel. Learned to cut, weld, buff and smooth, shape and hammer metal, as well as how to use an angle grinder and rivet.

My second flower used more rivets and was set on a wire to uniformly articulate each of the petals.

BAKUNAWA MASK

This piece was inspired by the mythical Filipino dragon, the Bakunawa. It’s both a mask and an armored alien shell.

THE PROCESS

CONCEPT

Drawing out the blueprint and cutting out a paper draft.

CUTTING AND DRILLING

Cutting the 17 gauge sheet metal using metal sheers and smoothing the edges using a sand belt. Then drilled rivet holes into the flat sheets.

SHAPING

Roughly shaping each piece using hammers and other tools against an anvil or wooden stump divots.

REFINING AND FINAL DETAILS

Carefully defining the precise shape and edges, as well as sanding and buffing every surface. Then connected each piece by hammering in the rivets, before finally brushing steel blackener all over for a more finished look, and waxing to maintain the longevity of the piece.
